Buyers Guide

What Push Mower Should I Get?

A lawn mower is one of the best and most essential tools for any lawn. While you can avoid purchasing other landscaping tools, there’s no avoiding the need to cut your grass regularly. Not only does it keep your lawn healthy and attractive, but it also conveys the appearance of a well-kept home, boosting curb appeal and resale value. To make your garden look extra tidy, it’s worth investing in a high-quality leaf blower, as well as a wheelbarrow.

Before you go out and buy a new mower, it’s important to understand the options available so you can make an educated purchasing decision. There are basically four types of mowers: gas, electric, riding, and manual reel mowers. In order to decide which you should get, let’s take a quick look at each.

Electric Mowers

There are two kinds of electric mowers to choose from—corded and cordless. Corded electric mowers are powered through an electrical cord, meaning you’ll have to run an extension cord from a power outlet in order to operate the tool. These mowers can run as long as power is supplied to them, making them great for prolonged use. The downside is that you are restricted by the length of your power cord, though with a variety of lengths available, this is an easy issue to work around.

Cordless mowers run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, allowing you to operate the tool easily without the hassle of a power cord. The trade-off with cordless mowers is that you’re limited by the operation time offered by the battery. Most people work around this limitation by having a fully-charged spare battery on hand.

Gas Mowers

Gas-powered mowers are powerful machines that use gasoline that you can easily get from the local gas station. They normally run on a two or four stroke engine which requires regular maintenance. Due to this, they need more care than electric mowers in order to keep them running efficiently. The benefit of these fuel-powered mowers is that they are more powerful than their electric counterparts.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about your battery running low or having a limited reach due to an electrical cord. If you run out of gas, you simply fill it up again. These mowers are normally very heavy and sturdy and have wider cutting decks that allow you to make larger cutting paths as you mow, and the best at speeding up the process.

Reel Mowers

If you’re looking for a light, affordable alternative to a power tool, there are also old-fashioned reel mowers available. These mowers were once common but have fallen out of favor due to the popularity of gas and electric mowers. But they’ve seen resurgence due to improvements in design that have made them a bit easier to use than they once were.

These manual tools require you to push them. As you proceed, the blades cut grass with a shearing motion. There are bag attachments that can catch some of your grass but most of the clippings are left behind and act as a natural fertilizer for your lawn.

Riding Mowers

The riding mower is the big boy on the block. They can be rather expensive but these gas-powered machines make mowing grass easy. You simply sit back and drive across your lawn, saving you the hassle that comes with a walk-behind model. While powerful and extremely efficient, due to their size and turning ability, they are best suited for medium to large size yards.

What’s Best for You?

For a small, even lawn, a reel mower is the most economical and green option. If you have a small or medium size lawn with some hard-to-reach areas, an electric model is perfect for you. For medium or large yards with uneven terrain, you can’t go wrong with a gas-powered tool.

And if you own a large piece of property and don’t have any size restrictions, then a riding model might be ideal. With several options out there, it can be confusing but as long as you keep the size of your lawn in mind, you’ll be able to buy the model that is best for you.

Who Makes the Best Lawn Mower Battery?

While most gas-powered walk-behind mowers don’t require batteries to run, you certainly need one to operate riding mowers or a lawn tractor. Why? Because these mowers usually have components that aren’t found on smaller mowers such as headlights, ignitions, starters, and electric clutches. These parts require the aid of a battery to work.

The battery is already installed when you purchase it, so unless it dies on you, you’re not going to have to worry about replacement. But it’s still good to know who makes the best battery so you can be confident that the model you are buying is going to run smoothly and reliably.
